Formic acid, systematically named methanoic acid, is the simplest carboxylic acid. The chemical formula is HCCOHor HCO2H. It is an important intermediate in chemical synthesis and occurs naturally, most notably in some ants. Colorless fuming and inflammable liquid with strong irritating smell,soluble in water and alcohol. Specific gravity: 1.2201(20°c). Melting point: 8.3°c. Boiling point 100°c.
